Obama calls on Merkel for more support in Libya

US President Barack Obama has asked Germany to provide more assistance in Libya as NATO countries step up efforts to force embattled leader Moammer Gadhafi from power.

"I am looking forward to discussions with the Chancellor, how we can work together to react more efficiently to changes in the region, especially Libya," Obama said ahead of Merkel's state visit that is set to begin on Monday.

In an interview with the Berlin-based Tagespiegel newspaper, the US head of state praised Berlin for already offering "indirect assistance" in Libya but added that the people in Libya and other countries in the region deserved the resolute help of countries like Germany and the United States.

"The lack of democratic experience in the region does not mean that the people's yearning for freedom is less significant or that they do not deserve our support."

Merkel's 'dream of freedom'

Obama also praised Merkel as a "close friend" and Germany as one of the "closest partners" the US has in the world. He said he could count on the chancellor when she made promises and, even though the two don't always see eye to eye on every issue, "we are always honest with each other as close friends should be."

Merkel is set to receive during her visit to Washington the Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States.

Obama said Merkel would be receiving the distinction for her "dream of freedom" which she had with her in former Communist East Germany and which made her the first female German chancellor.

"In1989, Germany made the way to freedom possible for the countries of the former Warsaw Pact. Two decades later it serves as proof that democracy rewards those who are ready to work hard and make sacrifices," Obama said.

Germany smash Italy ahead of Women's World Cup

Germany's youngsters turned on the magic in a national women's team warm-up match on Friday night ahead of this year's women's World Cup, helping the defending champions to a 5-0 thumping of Italy.

The Italians went a goal down on 32 minutes after defender Roberta D'Adda netted an own goal, putting the score at 1-0 at the half.

Young star Alexandra Popp, fresh after a half-time substitution, doubled the lead only a minute after the break, and 20-year-old Kim Kulig made it 3-0 after 62 minutes, following up on her goal against North Korea last month.

Celia Okoyino da Mbabi, 23, hit the fourth goal only seven minutes later, and Popp secured her brace in the 77th minute after a final pass from Okoyino da Mbabi to leave the score at 5-0.

Germany will play further warm-up matches against Holland and Norway ahead of the team's opening World Cup fixture at Berlin's Olympic Stadium against Canada on June 26.

Gomez strikes late to hand Germany euro qualifier victory

Germany came away late 2-1 winners over a gallant Austria on Friday thanks to a brace of goals from striker Mario Gomez.

The victory pushes die Mannschaft further ahead in Group A in their quest to qualify for next year's European Championships. Germany now sit on top on 18 points from six games.

Austria, who sorely needed a win and were unlucky to come away from the match without any points, remain stuck in fourth place in the group on seven points, three behind Turkey and four behind Belgium.

Bayern Munich frontman Gomez gave the Germans the lead in the dying minutes of the first half off a corner from club colleague Toni Kroos. But the lead didn't last long.

It took the Austrians only four minutes into the new half to break even when German defender Arne Friedrich helped a ball by Austrian midfielder David Alaba into the net.

Minutes later, the capacity crowd at Vienna's Ernst-Happel Stadion were brought to their feet when Stefan Kulovits hit the post with a nice shot.

The Austrians kept their foot on the Germans' throats with a handful of chances, whilst Germany also had their fair share of opportunities.

The game looked destined to end in a draw, as would have been justified; however, Gomez swooped in the 90th minute with a strong header right in front of goal off a Philipp Lahm cross from the right.

Germany next face Azerbaijan in Baku on June 7, while Austria have to wait until September 2, when they have a chance to avenge their loss to Germany in Gelsenkirchen.
